Bringing relevant news to you, regardless of language

To help bridge language barriers between you and the news of interest to you from around the world -- and to bring you more diverse perspectives on foreign events -- we’ve added a new “translate” button to the expandable story boxes in the U.S. English edition of Google News.

Clicking the translate button reveals the English translation of the original headline using Google Translate. Clicking on the headline takes you to the publisher’s website where you can choose to use Google Translate to see an English version of the entire article. Headlines are labeled with their country of origin.

To do this, we look for foreign articles from local sources on a relevant news topic. For example, in the case of the flood in Thailand, in addition to surfacing English articles from international press like New York Times, we might show a related article from a local source like อาร์วายที9.

At the same time, we hope readers will benefit from finding relevant news in other languages and being able to read it without knowing the language.

More points of view on Google News

By Jayakumar Hoskere, Software Engineer

When a big story breaks, there are often over a thousand articles written about the news event. At Google News, we work hard to surface the most relevant and interesting content to you -- so you can spend less time sorting through thousands of articles, and more time consuming news from a range of diverse perspectives.

For instance, since introducing expandable stories, we have added additional labels to call out special types of articles in many editions. These labels are designed to highlight different content types on Google News, and show you stories that complement and expand upon standard news reporting. The four labels we recently launched include:
  • Live Updating: A live-updating article, such as a liveblog.
  • Featured: An article a publisher has told us is standout.
  • Fact-check: An article providing fact-check content about the story.
  • Your Preferred source: An article from a source that you preferred.

Evaluating a story from different angles often provides a sharper perspective. That is why we also now highlight special types of articles in many Google News search results. Your search results will not only show recent articles, but also those from diverse perspectives that relate to a given query.

We also recently added the Translate button to non-English international stories in expandable story boxes in the U.S edition, giving you the ability to read pieces from all over the world -- even if you don’t speak the language.

We hope you find these changes useful as we continue to develop opportunities for you to find more interesting and valuable content.

Highlighting journalists on Google News

Posted by Eric Weigle, Software Engineer

Great journalism takes more than facts and figures -- it takes skilled reporters to knit together compelling stories. Knowing who wrote an article can help readers understand the article's context and quality, see more articles by that person, and even interact directly with them. Whole communities can form around prominent contributors, which is why we started showing information about content creators next to their material in Google Search.

Accordingly, Google News is rolling out more information about journalists over the next several weeks, starting with English-language editions. When reporters link their Google profile with their articles, Google News now shows the writer’s name and how many Google+ users have that person in their circles. For the lead article for each story, Google News also shows that reporter’s profile picture and enables readers to add them to their Google+ circles right from the Google News homepage.

If you are a journalist and would like to participate, please follow the instructions in our Help Center. If you are a reader, we hope you enjoy learning more about the faces behind the news.

News joins Google Dashboard

Halloween is almost here and we're celebrating early. No trick -- just a treat. As of now, you can access Google News in the Google Dashboard. This gives you the ability to see basic information about your Google News personalizations, check out our privacy policy and click through to edit your preferences.

We're excited to bring you this additional level of control and encourage you to give it a whirl.

More Powerful +1s on Google News

Posted by Erich Schmidt, Software Engineer

Over the past few months, myriad sites across the web (including Google News) have adopted the +1 button to help start conversations. But there hasn’t been an easy way for signed-in users to see what news articles your friends are enjoying -- until now.

Starting today, the Spotlight section will sometimes include articles that your Gmail contacts and people in your Google+ circles have publicly +1’d. You can see their profile pictures and click through to their Google+ profiles, just like on Social Search. And of course you can +1 the stories too, expressing your opinion and optionally sharing with your circles.

Here’s what Spotlight looks like with social annotations:

We hope this change helps you find more great articles to enjoy, and gives more power to your +1s.

Samsung Kies 2.0

Samsung Kies 2.0

The mobile phone world is currently dominated by one of the fiercest battles we’ve ever seen: Android devices challenge the iPhone and its iOS and vice-versa, a dispute that can only be good for customers. If you’re an Android user and a Samsung client, you sure know how important it is to manage your device using a computer application. Not to mention the need for backups and restores every time something goes wrong.

Samsung has developed the so-called Kies application, a downloadable tool that lets its clients connect the mobile phones to their computers and thus take full advantage of them by copying videos, photos and music and backing up important data and contacts.

Installing Samsung Kies takes a while, but only because it comes with the drivers you’ll need to successfully connect the device to the computer. There are two options to do that, via a USB cable or using Wi-Fi, if your phone has such a feature. During our test, we decided to give the second option a spin because it’s easier to work without cables and stuff.

We don’t want to be mean and say that Samsung Kies reminds us of iTunes, but Samsung Kies reminds us of iTunes. There are similar features, obviously with a different interface, but we’re sure there’s nothing wrong with it, an Android device is very advanced so having all these goodies is a must.

We had absolutely no problem connecting the device to the computer, and everything worked like a breeze the whole time. There’s also a tiny settings menu, but nothing too complicated to be mentioned here.

Overall, if you are a Samsung client you definitely have to use Samsung Kies. It’s freeware and it’s so powerful that you will definitely fall in love with it.

Wisdom _ Andrew Zuckerman

Wisdom: The Greatest Gift One Generation Can Give To Another
English | ISO | 3.2GB
Genre: eLearning

Inspired by the idea that one of the greatest gifts one generation can give to another is the wisdom it has gained from experience, multi-award-winning photographer and filmmaker Andrew Zuckerman has recorded the thoughts and ideas of fifty of the world's most prominent writers, artists, designers, actors, politicians, musicians, and religious and business leaders, all over sixty-five years old.

To create profound, honest, and truly revealing portraits of these luminaries, Zuckerman has captured their voices, their physical presence, and the written word. The resulting book and film, included here on a DVD, provide an extraordinary legacy for the generations that follow, and a timeless portrait of the common experiences that unite us all.

Andrew Zuckerman was born in Washington D.C., in 1977. After an internship at the International Center of Photography in New York, he attended New York University's School of Visual Arts to study photography and film, and graduated in 1999.

His photography and film work has been commissioned extensively for numerous brands throughout the world and has received many awards, including the D&AD Yellow Pencil award for excellence in photography.

Zuckerman's first film, High Falls, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2007 before going on to win Best Short Narrative at the Woodstock Film Festival. His last book, Creature, was published worldwide in November 2007.

Portable AutoPlay Media Studio v8.0.7.0

Overview of AutoPlay Media Studio 8
Are you looking for a faster, easier way to create software applications for the Microsoft Windows platform? Congratulations! Your search is over…

AutoPlay Media Studio 8 delivers on the promise of rapid application development. What would normally take days or weeks to build using traditional software development tools (C, C++, Java, Visual Basic) can now be created in record time – by just about anyone. And not just simple little scripts and forms. We’re talking about full-featured interactive multimedia applications complete with web interaction, database connectivity, video playback and much more.

Now that you’ve found us, grab a cup of coffee and let’s get acquainted. You’ll more than make up the time later.

Features:
Easy to Learn Visual Software Development
It couldn’t be easier to create powerful multimedia software applications. AutoPlay Media Studio is filled with wizards, tutorials, a user’s guide, context sensitive help and much more. It’s also backed up with world-class technical support options, online discussion groups, and video training lessons.

No Programming – Simple Scripting – Hardcore Coding. It’s Your Choice!
You don’t need to be a programmer to use AutoPlay Media Studio. It’s easy enough for anyone to use. While a full wizard-assisted scripting engine is available for power users, the new Quick Action tab lets new users get up to speed right away. Just fill in the blanks to handle the most popular actions like opening documents, running programs, switching pages and more. It’s really that easy!

NEW! Modernized Visual Workspace
AutoPlay Media Studio has always looked pretty slick, but that wasn’t good enough. The entire project workspace has been overhauled. Selection boxes, toolbars, context menus – everything has been redone using a consistent color palette, light source and 3D perspective. You spend a lot of time working on your projects. Your tools should serve to increase your productivity, rather than distract you. With AutoPlay Media Studio 8, you’ll find everything is more logically arranged and attractively presented – so you can get more done.

Professional Templates to Jump Start Your Development
Choose from a variety of ready-to-use projects and then modify them to fit your needs. We include examples of software installer menus, electronic business cards, marketing brochures and many others. It’s also easy to make your own project templates or to add in templates made by others.

Improved! Project Explorer
Get an overview of your project in one place. You can see all of the pages, events, dialogs and objects in your project organized into a tree hierarchy. Double-click any item to edit its properties or right-click for common commands. It’s a great way to see how everything is connected. The Project Explorer in AutoPlay Media Studio 8 has been revamped to give you a better overall view of your project. Things like better icons, collapsible Dialog and Page categories and better visual indications for hidden and locked objects will be much appreciated. Additional context-sensitive right-click menus have been added and reworked to present you with only the most appropriate commands for working with objects, pages, dialogs and events.

Properties Pane
The properties pane is a fast way to view and edit all of the attributes of a page or object. You can interactively edit the object text, font, size, color, tooltip and much more without missing a beat.

Improved! Application Startup Dialog
AutoPlay Media Studio 8 is all about helping you get things done faster and easier. Even small things like the startup welcome screen have been improved! The startup screen now gives you fast access to multiple recently used projects, one-click restore of the last used project, or simply creating a new project using a template or blank project. Additionally, an integrated RSS feed keeps you updated on product improvements, updates, bug fixes and news!

Page and Dialog Management
Pages (and dialogs) are the backbone of AutoPlay Media Studio. Consider that you can have up to 1000 of them in each project and you’ll realize the importance of effective page management. Accessing pages is easy in AutoPlay, thanks to the page tabs on the main window. You can also easily change page order, rename or remove pages and more with the click of your mouse.

Drag and Drop File Layout System (Asset Management)
When you want to add or remove whole folders of files, or fine-tune the structure of a CD/DVD/BLURAY project, the File Layout dialog comes in very handy. It’s split into two panes, with your computer’s file system on the top and your project on the bottom. Select the files you want, click “add” and you’re done!

Thumbnail File Browsers
The file browsers in the product support thumbnail view, making it much faster and easier to locate files.

Quick Preview
Click the preview button and try out your project whenever you want. There’s no lengthy compiling process to wait for, so you can test changes as you make them.

NEW! Eyedropper Color Picker
Easily match colors thanks to the new eyedropper style color picker. Integrated into all color choosers, simply move your mouse pointer off the dialog and watch it turn into an eyedropper cursor. Click on the color of any pixel on your screen and voila – you’ve automatically set the color to match.

Undo/Redo
Full support for undo and redo operations make it quick and easy to try out new ideas.

Align and Arrange
A full suite of alignment tools helps make quick work of your layout tasks. Simply select a group of objects and click the desired alignment button to line up their edges on the top, left, right or bottom. You can also easily distribute objects over a given space, make them all the same size, adjust their “z” order, and more.

Group, Pin, Lock & Hide
Professional design tools like object grouping allow you to move and work with multiple objects at once. The lock and pin tools keep you from accidentally moving an object out of place, while the hide and show feature is great for trying out different designs.

Grid and Ruler
Toggle on the grid for easy object placement – the automatic snapping feature makes it quick to use. The ruler is a helpful precision tool assisting you in pixel level placement of your design elements.

Guidelines
Just like in your favorite image editing software, but now in your favorite multimedia development software! Using guidelines, you can set up margins and placement rules to make sure your design looks perfect.

Customizable Toolbars
All of the toolbars and keyboard shortcuts can be reconfigured and customized to your preference. You’re not restricted by the default set up – you can lay out your favorite features the way you like to work with them.

Built-in Spelling Checker
Make sure that typos don’t creep into your projects. Just about anywhere you can type, you can perform a spell check to ensure error-free text. Dictionaries are available for over a dozen languages including English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Swedish, Danish, Croatian, Czech, Polish and Slovenian.

Content Gallery

Internet Explorer 10

Internet Explorer 10.0 Preview 2 (2.10.8103.0)

Internet Explorer has never been renowned for its standards support, and with good reason — the browser has always trailed far behind the competition. Today’s release of IE10 Platform Preview 2, though, showed that maybe, just maybe, things are beginning to change.
Major additions include support for web workers, an interesting technology that allows web applications to run complex JavaScripts in the background. And so lengthy tasks won’t have to leave you hanging any more: the application’s interface should still be able to respond to your clicks.
New support for iframe isolation and the HTML5 sandbox will help to harden the security of web applications, closing many security loopholes. The support for CSS3 Positioned Floats allows developers to easily create print-like layouts, where text can flow smoothly around images or other objects. And elsewhere you’ll find support for the HTML5 Parser, HTML5 Forms, channel messaging, Media Query Listeners and more.
We had no problems running it with IE9, though, and if you’re at all interested in Microsoft’s expanding web standards support then Internet Explorer 10 Platform Preview 2 is definitely worth a few minutes of your time. Keep in mind, though, that as with the first preview, it’s Windows 7-only (x86 or x64.)

A History of the World through Islamic Eyes

Destiny Disrupted: A History of the World Through Islamic Eyes
[Audiobook]
By Tamim Ansary
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Publisher: PublicAffairs

In light of ongoing events across North Africa and the Middle East - and everything said about those vast regions at the moment must be in light of the surprising, sometimes shocking and sometimes inspirational occurrences happening there now - a book like Afghan-American author Tamim Ansary's Destiny Disrupted: A History of the World Through Islamic Eyes only accumulates esteem. The broad survey, already a sorely needed English-language entry nearly alone among the vacuum of popular histories covering Islam and the cultures it has defined, takes on even greater importance as a keystone for every clued-in or clueless American hoping to rightly comprehend what's happening in the southern and eastern Mediterranean beyond its being, in the parlance of the times, "on fire."

For those familiar with but not completely versed in the intricacies of the Islamic world from Muhammad's life onward - or those whose in-depth knowledge of that history extends only as far as a single 14-page paper his second year of college on the interplay between politics and literature in the Muslim "golden age" - an overview like Ansary's is necessary because it relates the disparate parts, geographically remote lineages and contemporary events perhaps most known to the curious English-speaking reader in a way that provides a pan-Islamic picture without becoming mired in too many minute historical details. So, finally those discrete facts and figures like Sufi poet-mystic Rumi, the Sassanid dynasty, Nasserism, Moorish Spain, Suleiman the Magnificent and "the sick man of Europe," the Battle of Talas, Moghul-era India and the basic tenets of the Muslim faith are carefully pieced together. And more than that, that knowledge is extended by the book's historical breadth, and added to the pock-marked puzzle are the lesser-known necessities: the life story of the Prophet Muhammad, the theological underpinnings of Shi'a Islam, Muslim accounts of the West's many internecine conflicts and, finally, the reasons behind what the laughably provincial call "the clash of civilizations" but is more akin to simply the newest incarnation of a stormy eternal bond.

And even if you aren't the type of person with at least a working knowledge of the ever-changing, highly dynamic Muslim multiverse because you've never had the opportunity; or even if, like a certain famous Vulpus vulgaris, you had no interest in the world outside your own until 9/11, Destiny Disrupted gives a thorough rundown from inception to modernity of the diverse and storied regions which Islam, the fastest growing religion on Earth, has spread its message to. Today, Islam stretches from Morocco to Malaysia, from Dakar, Senegal to Urumqi, China, and arguably even further than that given the broad spread of Muslims living in virtually all parts of the planet today.

Put simply: though at times the book skips too lightly through some epochs and certain events are left off the chalkboard entirely, there aren't enough overviews of this variety available to readers in the language, fewer still which offer a balanced history of the religion, and even fewer yet which contain prose as breezy and easy to pick through as Ansary's. For those desiring such a survey, uninterested in either the paternalistically dilettantish or obsessively academic accounts, it fills a void. In a way similar to in sense yet opposite in syntax, the paucity of English language works covering the pan-Islamic world increases our mistaken beliefs about it, just as the educational and cultural saturation of Anglo-America's most revered and celebrated (and embellished) figures and eras, like Elizabethan England, the world wars, the American Founders and Jesus, grows myopia and mythos around them.

More than ever ours is a shared history; while the gulf of cultural solipsism and pretended-at differences may have divided us disingenuously before, through the common pursuit of peace and affluence (in other words, trade) our destinies have again become thrust together, in the way which they have always been but which we, sleepily, had forgotten. Ansary, author also of the memoir West of Kabul, East of New York and himself a product of the blurred abutment between the false dichotomy of Occident and Orient, knows this too well, and ultimately it is the retelling of this Eurasian seed-dream history's forgotten half that is Destiny Disrupted's greatest success.
