Ubuntu is chock full of apps to help you manage, fix and share your photos with the world, whatever gadget you use to take them. Support for cameras and phones is legendary and all without drivers. And Shotwell allows you to manage and share your pictures easily - on all the most popular photo and social network sites.

Or synchronising your files and notes and accessing them from anywhere. Or consolidating your computer and mobile phone contacts and safely sharing documents and pictures with them. Ubuntu One does all this and more.

The desktop CD allows you to try Ubuntu without changing your computer at all, and at your option to install it permanently later. This type of CD is what most people will want to use. You will need at least 256MB of RAM to install from this CD.
The server install CD allows you to install Ubuntu permanently on a computer for use as a server. It will not install a graphical user interface.
The combined install/live DVD allows you either to install Ubuntu permanently on a computer, or (by entering 'live' at the boot prompt) to try Ubuntu without changing your computer at all.

Microsoft Windows 8 Developer Preview

Microsoft Windows 8 Developer Preview

The Windows 8 Developer Preview provides an early (but surprisingly complete) look at the next generation of Windows, complete with touch interface, brand new desktop apps, and more.

You're not a developer? You don't have a touch screen device? Don't worry, this release is aimed at developers, but anyone can use it. And while the new interface is very touch-oriented, it also works with the mouse and keyboard.

You do need to be careful where you install it, though. The Developer Preview requires a clean install, and can't be uninstalled later, so it's best to use it on a spare system, if you have one (especially as it's also an early version, buggy, incomplete, and with no support on offer from Microsoft). If you've an old laptop capable of running Windows 7, for instance, then it should be able to run Windows 8, too.

Or if you don't have the necessary hardware, then it can be safely run in a VirtualBox virtual machine, instead.

However you install the Developer Preview, once it's launched you'll find the new Metro-style desktop (if you've ever used or seen Windows Phone 7 then you'll know exactly what to expect) comes packed with extras. So as well as links to Explorer, Control Panel, IE and the old-style desktop (which is still available, if you get lost) there's a weather app, social networking tools, games, productivity apps and a whole lot more.

These are just sample applications, not what will be included with the finished Windows 8. They're still interesting to explore, though, and once you get tired of these then you can always install and run your existing apps, just as you always did. Well, that's the plan, at least - there are sure to be incompatibilities in this release, however, so don't be surprised if you have some issues.

System Requirements
Windows Developer Preview works great on the same hardware that powers Windows Vista and Windows 7:
* 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
* 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
* 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
* DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
* Taking advantage of touch input requires a screen that supports multi-touch
* To run Metro style Apps, you need a screen resolution of 1024 X 768 or greater

In October 2009, there was unofficial information that the developers of Windows 8 at this moment realize the introduction of IA-128 full binary compatibility with existing 64-bit instructions. Established agreements with leading manufacturers of processors and other hardware, including companies Intel, AMD, Hewlett-Packard and IBM.

On the basis of unconfirmed information in Windows 8 will focus on voice recognition and voice control. One innovation will be the face recognition system users via a Web camera. This system can independently translate the PC into a different power modes, depending on whether the user is in front of a webcam or not. In some form such a concept is implemented in the game controller Kinect for Xbox 360.

The presentation was a lot of attention paid to the competitors - Apple and its products and services, Google Chrome OS, Android, WebOS. So, Microsoft will start the Windows Store, repeating many of the functions of the App Store for iPhone. This service will be integrated into Windows 8. Need to increase the speed of startup and shutdown prompted by Google Chrome OS.
In Windows 8 will present new tools for security, which would simplify diagnostics and troubleshooting. Function is referred to "reset system" that will allow you to reinstall Windows 8, while keeping all user files. Also, Windows 8 will support the accelerometers, encryption, hard drive, support for GPS in netbooks and notebooks, using WWAN-ins.

Windows XP Pro SP3 Integrated Jan 2011

Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP3 Integrated January 2011 Corporate

With Windows XP Professional Edition with Service Pack 3, you get safer browsing and communication, powerful security tools, and improved experiences. Windows XP is the operating system release that unifies the Microsoft range, with all the desktop versions now built on the NT/2000 code base rather than the shakier foundation of Windows 95, 98, and Me. That makes XP a great upgrade for users of the now-obsolete 9x and Me line, but for those already on Windows 2000 Professional it is a closer call. Despite the similar name, there is no special synergy between Windows XP and Office XP, which works fine on Windows 2000.

Linux Mint 10 "Julia"

Linux Mint 10 Julia

Linux Mint's purpose is to produce an elegant, up to date and comfortable GNU/Linux desktop distribution.

Is Linux Mint suitable for companies?
Yes. Linux Mint offers paid commercial support to companies and individuals. Free community support is also available from the forums and the IRC channel. The main purpose of Linux Mint is to innovate and constantly bring the best desktop solutions to its users. For this reason, the release cycle is fast and a new version of Linux Mint can be released every month or every two months. All released versions of Linux Mint are actively supported and some of the releases (possibly Bianca or Cassandra) will come with a Long Term Support guarantee (a guarantee that our Support Center will support these releases for the years to come).

Is Linux Mint suitable for individuals?
Yes, definitely. We believe Linux is the best operating system on the market. There are more than 300 active Linux distributions and we're working hard at becoming the best alternative for your desktop. This is a tough competition as there are other great desktop operating systems and distributions out there. We have faith in the quality of our desktop and a lot of great ideas. If your computer is a PC and you have more than 512MB RAM you should try Linux Mint and see what you think about it. If you're running a 5 years old non-free operating system such as Microsoft Windows XP you should definitely be impressed. We like hearing about your experience and taking your suggestions onboard so please give us your feedback.

Why is there a Light Edition and a Full Edition?
Linux Mint respects the GPL and it also respects the copyrights and licenses of the proprietary software it distributes. However it uses technologies that have been patented in some parts of the World. Most countries do not recognize the legitimacy of software patents so for most of our users this is not a problem. But if you're unlucky and you live in a country where software patents are legally enforcable, you need a version of Linux Mint which is free of patented technologies, and this is what the Light Edition is about.

Why does Linux Mint include proprietary drivers?
It doesn't. If it did, it would be legally wrong (because it would violate the GPL) or ethically wrong (if some dirty trick was used for the user to link the code to the kernel for instance).

What about proprietary software?
We believe in open source and release all our work with the corresponding source code. We owe a lot to the Free Software movement and to the GPL but we also owe a lot to all the developers who contributed ideas and tools and who made software better and better throughout the years. Some of them released their source code as well and thus granted us more freedom and more flexibility. Others released their software with proprietary licenses and although this didn't give us the freedom we would have liked it still contributed to make software better. We like Software in general, Free Software even more, but we do not believe in boycotting Proprietary Software.
